Frequently Asked Visitor Questions

To help you know what to expect when you visit us, we have assembled these “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQs).  Of course, if you have additional questions, you may call the church office: 703-527-4766.  We welcome you to First Presbyterian Church and our church family.

How do I get there?
First Church is located in the heart of the Ballston section of Arlington, just two blocks from the Ballston Common Mall and less than a quarter of a mile from the Ballston Metro Station. Our address is 601 N. Vermont Street, Arlington, VA 22203. For specific directions and details on using public transportation, please click here

IMG 0629-317-800-600-80When are your worship services?
Our services are at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m, except during the summer months, when there is one service at 10:00 a.m.

Where should I park?
For your convenience, a parking lot is located behind the church, immediately off of Carlin Springs Road. Park anywhere you like, and feel free to use one of our designated visitor spaces!

Where should I go once I park?
If you park in the lot behind the church, you may enter via the doors on this side of the building on the left side, then go up the steps. You will see an usher, who will direct you to the sanctuary. Note that this path will lead you in via the front of the sanctuary. Alternatively, you may walk around to the front of the building. From the parking lot, simply walk to the left, across the grassy area parallel to Carlin Springs Road, and then climb the steps and enter the church via the white double doors. An usher will greet you once you enter; this will bring you into the back of the sanctuary.

What kind of accommodations do you have for individuals with mobility challenges or disabilities?
First Church offers a variety of services for individuals with mobility challenges or disabilities, including an elevator, hearing assistance devices and large print bulletins. You will find the elevator entrance as you walk from the parking lot toward the front of the church building, and signs clearly mark its location. Ushers can provide a large print bulletin. Are children allowed in the worship service?
Children of all ages are always welcome in worship services! That said, we know that sometimes it's too much to ask that a child stay in a pew for an hour, so we also offer a few childcare options:

  1. First, our nursery (Room 101) is open to children aged 0 to 3 years. The nursery is wonderfully furnished and is staffed by paid professionals. A silent paging system is used so that staff may reach you during the service if your child needs you. Baby changing tables are located in both of the downstairs bathrooms off of the Social Hall.

  2. Second, children ages 3-4 through 1st grade may leave the worship service with our Director of Children's and Youth Ministry after "Time With Children" for Bridges to Worship, a story oriented program which includes a time of connecting the day's scripture to age appropriate secular picture books, snack, and a time for activities. We return to worship in time for the final hymn, and on communion Sundays we are sure to return in time for the children to participate in the sacrament.

Is there a dress code?
In general, our congregation's attire probably falls under the classification of business casual, but on any given Sunday, you'll find ties and jackets as well as jeans – so please feel free to dress in the way that makes you most comfortable!

What should I expect during the worship service?
First Church's service is fairly traditional and is comprised of hymns, responsive readings, scripture readings, the sermon, prayers and frequently music offered by the choir, other ensembles, or instrumentalists.

What are the guidelines regarding communion?
We offer the sacrament of the Lord's supper every week at the 8:30 a.m. service and once a month at the 11:00 a.m. service. All who have been baptized (including children) in any church (Presbyterian or not) are welcome to participate, but are not required to do so.

Will I have to introduce myself?
No, visitors will never be asked to introduce themselves; nor will we ask visitors to stand so that they may be identified. Our members will likely introduce themselves and welcome you to our church.

What is the protocol during the offering?
If you would like to make a donation (cash or check) and place it in the offering plate when it is passed around, please feel free to do so – we certainly appreciate any and all contributions! However, this is entirely optional. The offering plate is not passed during the 8:30 a.m. service, but there is a basket where people may place their offering when they go to the chancel for communion. For your convenience, you may also give electronically on our website (click here).

Will someone contact me after I visit?
We encourage you to write your name, phone number and email address in our red Friendship Register when it is passed around. This will allow us to follow up with you to answer any questions that you might have about First Church.

What if I have additional questions about specific programs (e.g., children's ministry, young adult ministry, mission opportunities) or other aspects of the church?

Children's and Youth Ministry

Position Opening: Director of Children’s and Youth Ministry

The Director of Children’s and Youth Ministry is the staff person primarily responsible for the Christian education and worship experience of children and youth from birth through 12th grade. The Director will report to the Pastor as a supervisor and to the Children’s and Youth Ministry Team (CYMT) for programs.  The position is a full-time (exempt) salaried position. For the complete job description please see FPCA_DCYM_June_2019.pdf.

Take a few moments to check out a PHOTO SLIDESHOW of the Summer 2014 Youth and Middle School Mission Trip. Five middle and high school girls were ready for a mission adventure. The experience depended their faith, broadened their perspective as compared to their own lives, opened their hearts and the girls were inspired by volunteers that were committed to making a difference.

At First Church, we partner with families to guide and nurture children and youth, providing plenty of ways to encourage kids to know and follow Jesus Christ and be faithful members of his church.
